Halstead Potential Volume V* is the most abridged form into which an algorithm can be expressed. According to Halstead, this most abridged form would use the following (in a language ideally adapted to the algorithm to be translated):

• 2 operators (the name of the function and the assignment operator) and,
• $n_2^*$ operands

where $n_2^*$ is equal to the number of distinct component input or output parameters.
